About the event
CUSEAS is excited to present: City, Fish, Science: Southeast Asia’s Ocean from Ishak bin Ahmad to the Coral Triangle! The talk is held in collaboration with CU Nature Society, and is perfect for anyone interested in the environment and conservation.
This talk charts a biography of Southeast Asia’s ocean in the long twentieth century. It does so in three parts. First, it maps out an ecological space called the Coral Triangle, the planet's foremost center of marine biodiversity that stretches from Sumatra to Papua. Second, it explores how we know what we know about this vast biological hotspot through a history of city, fish, and science. This second part centers around the life and work of Ishak bin Ahmad (1887-1969), the father of Singapore’s first president Yusof bin Ishak (1910-1970). The talk closes with a sense of how local scientists and local foodways are shaping not only new understandings about the Coral Triangle, but also, and more urgently, new ways to further its conservation.
